House in Miyoshi

Architect: Design Office

Location: Miyoshi, Hiroshima, Japan

Year built: 2011-2012

The ‘house in miyoshi,’ a  suburban neighborhood of Hiroshima, adjacent to active railroad tracks. Due to the noise from the trains throughout the day, the dwelling is composed as a continuous exterior shell encapsulating the interior program to provide acoustic comfort. The various private functions are located within square nodes over two levels, oriented to open ‘friendly’ views to the quieter side of town. The social interstitial space is the result of connecting the private volumes and contains the kitchen, living and dining rooms, on an elevated central podium under a double-height ceiling. Peripheral windows and various slender staircases create a free circulation and light-filled interior mass that feels like a protected exterior space. A light neutral grey interior works in conjunction with hardwood floors and plywood sheets on the
first level.
